Initial Ideas
My first ideas consisted around the change between normal life and covid life. This was a big change and effected the whole planet, i though i could utilise its significance by creating a documentary. In this documentary i'd interview different people and ask them different questions. As this effected the whole world i think the documentary would so well, because everyone cares. The issue with this idea is that it will not be relevant enough in 8 weeks for it to be at its maximum potential. In 8 weeks (when the project is due) covid will no longer be as much as a hot topic as it is now and has been in the past.
I think location planning would not be too much of a struggle, town centre, home and maybe inside shops would work. I would also use videos and images of before and after covid, simply the face masks people wore would signify before.

Suggested & Potential Ideas
During a one to one with Nicky she asked me different questions about what i want to be and where i want to end with this course. She brought up the final project and asked me things in relation to starting my planning. I was asked what i watch, this being either films or like specific youtube videos. I play and watch people play a game called Rust. The idea behind the game is that up to 700 people are abandoned on an island. You spawn on the beach, completely naked. No weapons, food, clothes and no hope. The goal of the game is essentially to become the richest on the island, own land and have the largest arsenal. The way you advance is by killing other people for the gear they have farmed for or farming yourself. You can play with friends or solo. Many people play in very large teams, these mainly consisting of asian players as the game is extremely popular within china and Korea. Usually when you encounter these teams, they are usually up to 20+ players per team, they are all talking and working together to dominate the island. Once everyone is established people start farming sulphur to produce explosives to breach other peoples bases and steal their things.
Now the way this links into creating a film is by what other have done. Many people online play for a couple weeks everyday 6+ hours a day to film what happens during them playing. They record their gameplay and edit it to create a film. Here are some examples:

As you can see these style video are usually 1hr+, i do not have that time and won't be making a 1 hour video. As i have minimum 5 minutes and maximum 10 minutes creating a rust style film/short film will be challenging. The props i'd potentially use would cost a lot of money if i do not make them myself. As well as props, location would be an issue as well. I'd essentially have to film in a desert as the majority of rust is based in the desert and snow, there is a bit of grass land but it'd be hard too find a similar area in real life.
Research
A plan i am quite confident in is using a briefcase to create a story. I have watched a few videos and short films that use a briefcase to create a story. I want a character to find a briefcase but not look in it for at least 3 minutes of the 5-6minutes of film. When the briefcase opens i want it do be full of different currencies. This would be to create confusion and make the audience think with the character who finds the case. I would either out a note in the case or something else with the money, mainly to either create a MacGuffin or reinforce confusion amongst the character and audience.
In this short film a brief case is used throughout the whole film. It is introduced quite briefly to create different stories with different characters. We only find out the significance of the case right at the end. I want to do something very similar, my plan is too keep the audience thinking and guessing in what's next. I don't want too show the significance of the briefcase until like 1 minute is left of the film.

This style of film is what i am going to try and achieve. This film is all one shot, it's only a minute and a half but it is very good. I like how it is all one shot and how we meet 3 characters throughout it. We don't learn much about them but we know enough. This film also reinforced my thought of keeping the audience thinking. We don't know why it's being passed on, why and who are they calling? All we know is that it is important, maybe not too everyone that touches it, but it is too someone. The shot style in this is also very interesting, its essentially effortless and takes no skill but it somewhat makes the short film what it is. It transfers from life too life with only around 20 seconds for each person. I will use this style of shot for some of my clips but not all, i can't do all 5 minutes like that. Furthermore, the significance of the box is not identified until the last 10 seconds of the film. The last lady opens it and it says '$1,000,000', we obviously know that is tons of money, but who's money is it? Is it hers? Her bosses? Is it clean or dirty? How did they get it? Why do they have it? Questions, this is what i want with my short film, questions.

To reveal the importance of the briefcase, i want it too be stolen. I have not settled on by who and why they'd steal it, but that's my plan. I want some sort of fight or one sided defence to come into the film, the issue being i do not know what style of film i want too produce. The idea of some sort of gun fight is nice but i also think an action based fight would be better. This being one guy fighting many people at once over the briefcase, loads of choreography would have to go into it but i think it could make then ending of the film worth while. Then after this fight the content of the briefcase will be revealed. The clip linked above is a very good example of my plan, i do not want two characters to be involved at the end, i want just one so it will let the audience know who is the main character. Props for a fight scene will vary, it depends on whether or not i want guns or hand to hand combat. If i was too use guns it'd most likely be real guns as my family owns legal firearms. Of course the major risk with this is using them in public which u cannot do unless its an un loaded shotgun and for the certificate owner to be present and have the certificate on them. As well as this gun safety as a whole is not to be forgotten and something bad can happen fast. I wanted to use an open field somewhere but all land i have private access too is taken up by horses and cows so essentially real guns is off the list. I wanted too use real guns as props to avoid buying thing, buying replica guns is 1, expensive and realistically i won't use them again and 2, risky in my case (to use on public land). I don't want any neighbours to think i am wielding a gun around my area. This is also another reason why i thought hand to hand combat will look and work better, it is also some what more actions style rather the just shooting someone.

One Shot Films:
This film uses the one shot method so well, throughout the entire thing we can see the same style tracking shots following the whole story. As my goal is to achieve constant straight tracking shots I need to make sure I use in camera transitions and also different shots. I won't be using any transition effects in post production, this mean all and every part of the film needs to be smooth and I need to utilize everything around me to create in camera transitions. For example I can use a lamppost or any sort of object I can pan the camera past. The story go this is similar too mine but in this the package's content leads to the final part of the story whereas my package is used throughout the entire thing, also the content is never revealed.

Survey/Questionaire
To help produce and develop different stories for each person who have a hold of the briefcase i need to research different ways and different ideas on how a person would react to what is in the case. I want the content of the case to be different for each person, the initial plan of revealing the content right at the end is still in play but vaguely. I want everyones reaction to be different when the content of the case is revealed. I also want too use different camera shots to capture said reactions. I will ask a few questions to different people asking how'd they react to what's in the case, as the content will be different for everyone the content of the case will essentially be their fate, aspirations or dreams in life.

Character Profiles:
Antagonist:
This is the villain of the film, we will be introduced to him very quickly. He will be related to the protagonist in some way, he will be in shot some times when the protagonist cannot see him. I will make it obvious that he is there to cause trouble in some way. Once the protagonist is introduced to the briefcase the antagonist will become very jealous and starts to fight for the briefcase. He will betray, kill, lie and steal from his family as the film advances. He won't be hated by his family but he also won't be liked, he is essentially the outcast of the family and that is why he is jealous.
Protagonist:
An every day bloke, he is a normal working bloke. He will make his way to work as usual, but when he gets to the train station he will see a case in a bin. At first he is skeptical and worries, he tries ignoring it but he eventually breaks. The content of the case amazes him so much that he is speechless, he runs home and shows his friend. The character himself is not in a good position in life, not much money, love or anything. He slowly realizes that the antagonist is lingering around him and becomes violent as the film progresses.
Friend:
This is essentially the side character of the show, they do not get a whole lot of screen time but they get enough to help the story. This character will be friend with both of the other characters, he will not like the antagonist as much as he does the protagonist. We will see the friend briefly interact with both characters but mainly the protagonist, he will have care of the briefcase for not long as what he sees inside it does not phase him much.
Target Audience
To start off with I need to understand what types of people watch action style films, action style films vary massively. This can be rom kids shows to mature 18+ films, I want to sit closer toward mature films. To understand what demographics watch certain films I have used some secondary research from different websites.
This is statistic taken from IMDb about the statistic of who rated and watched Kingsman. As you can see the ages vary a lot, this is because the films has different features that appeal to different age groups. Not many user 18s watched the show but loads of 18-44 year olds watched it. This is mainly because of age certificate rating and the whole style of the film. I would like to try and aim for a target audience of a bit lower, this being 18-30. So researching this will help me learn what to avoid and what to add to my film to make sure I can hit my ideal target audience.
IMDb. 2022. Kingsman: The Secret Service (2014) - IMDb. [online] Available at: <https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2802144/ratings> [Accessed 6 April 2022]. |
As I am trying to find different target audiences for different style action films I have attempted to find statistic for kids films. Not many websites provide numeric statistics for this specific film so I have settled for a paragraph about the basic demographic. This film varies in different scenes and makes you feel different emotions, as it is for 6+ year olds it is full of constant actions, bright colours and fun music.

The image above shows the basic target audience of the 2015 James Bond, this film is quite a mature film. I would take some of the combat from this film and put it into mine, the combat is basically what I am going for.

Colour scaling

This alley way is very similar to the one I am going to use, I have made sure to find a alleyway that is not completely dark. I did this so shots will be visible and won't need its exposure edited. The colours here are quite dark but the light creates a break in the dark colours. My last scenes will take place here, I think its the perfect setting for a fight scene/robbery scene.
|
Chippenham high street will be used for the mid part of my film, the colors here are also very muted, not too bright but not ridiculously dark. There are a few areas throughout of the town that are bright but I will try to record toward the end of the day, sunset to be exact. I don't want all the shots to be really dark.

Added audio was crucial too this film, the audio recorded through the camera was too loud. The wind blew into the microphone and basically made everything completely inaudible. To keep the outdoor feel I added a light wind sound effect and some bird noises throughout the film as it progressed, this definitely adds to the films quality and makes it sound better. As the character walks toward the road I made sure to add a car sound slowly fade in and out as he walked closer and further away from the road. As well as this I separately recorded a two second audio of the briefcase being opened and one of the case being dropped on the floor.
Referral Resubmit
This is a completely new story and idea.
This was all my mental notes dumped into a few pages. I needed to do this too make sure i did not forget important parts i wanted too add or loose the whole idea completely. Too start with this was the best place too start at for me, writing ideas down helps me further develop ideas and eventually produce what i had in mind. My idea was not written in any sort of template or whatever, i just opened a word document and wrote, i'd like too say it worked well and helped alot.
Script:
I wrote this script very briefly and it worked very well. As i made this idea up in the matter of a few hours, creating a script like this was essential. Without this i would not have been able to shoot consistently without having too stop and start over and over again. This script acted as a storyboard whilst shooting, i was always referring back to my script for not just voice lines, i used it for camera angles and general acting only scenes. Next time around writing a script will become more of a priority and i will write one too 'professional' standard not just write in short lines.
First Edit:
This is my first edit of my final project resubmission. In this edit there a few things missing and some things that need touching up. To start with i need to find some music that suits this specific genre of story, i have done some looking and i have not yet found one that suits the whole edit from start too finish. If i cannot find any that fit i will match different backing tracks together by fading them in and out throughout the film. There is one scene in my edit that is a montage waiting scene, there are many similar scenes like this online so finding some music for that should not be hard. Once i have done that i will move on too initial sound work, there are a few audio parts in my film that require some touching up. I have not matched some conversational clips 100% correctly, without these matching it does not let the story made sense and kind of makes the start of the film sound and look a bit sloppy. The only major flaws i see in terms of video clips is some are not complemented by the lighting a tall. Toward the end of the film you can see Max looking at his phone too check the time, as it is so sunny outside the phone screen is reflecting sun light so the time is not really visible at all. Too fix this i will attempt some slight colour correctioin to try and achieve a darker look on the phone screen but not too dark it looks bad.
I planned on using varying types of shots and different camera angles, i ended up using loads of wide shots and some close ups. I mainly did wide shots because majority of my piece was indoors and i wanted to capture the actors whole body in the majority of shots. I did close up shots too capture facial expressions and close ups of important information. I also attempted some pan shots where i would move from one part of the shot too another, these are fun to do because if done right they end up looking quite smooth. I want to perfect these type of shots so next time i will get my hands on some sort of gimble. At college we have those camera rigs but i find them so uncomfortable too use and you still kind of have to rely on yourself too stay steady. Aswell as these i also did a few tracking shots where i followed the actor, these go hand in hand with some of the continuity shots i included, i made sure the scenes of max walking toward his location where both tracking shots and continuity shots so i would have wider range of shots too evauate on.

Props:
Only one actual prop was used in my film, it's the toy gun shown throughout the whole film. I did not want too go overboard with props and make life harder, once i settled with my idea i got straight online and bought the first realistic prop gun i saw. This is it here: www.amazon.co.uk/Kandall-Colorful-Ejecting-Magazine-tactical/dp/B07GTPP8XC/ref=sr_1_5?crid=3R8OQHJUPDWGJ&keywords=prop+gun&qid=1653597050&sprefix=prop+gun%2Caps%2C59&sr=8-5&tag=coa_gb_g-21
I made sure too shoot when the gun was out when no one was around, the gun was surprisingly completely black which was great but i had black spray paint at hand just in case. The amazon listing showed it too be orange so i thought having it out in public would not of been a huge issue, i was wrong. Luckily we did not face any issues when recording scenes that required the gun out.
We did use Max's dog as a actor for a few seconds in my film, i don't think it counts as prop.

Location:
I chose Max's house and local field/woods too shoot my film. This being because of how open and free the area is too use. I wanted shots of the actor slowly approaching the target location so having woods and gates too pass through really helped to capture this. The woods itself was fine too walk through and likewise for the few fields we had too pass through. Previously there has been cows in a field we would have too go through but they weren't there so we did not have any issues. The end setting of the film was the best because i wanted to show the main actor essentially stalking his target, where we shot helped me capture this nicely. There was a tree Max perched on to aim in on his target, as well as this
Video analysis:
There a few things in my film which are similar to mine. Starting with the build up, you can see the sniper waiting for the time on the clock too hit the time he needs, i have also done this but i have made a short waiting montage of my character waiting for the right time. I think a simple short scene of this or even a graphic animation as shown in this movie clip can really make the build up fun too watch. Using these small build ups makes the viewer wait but not for too long, they also know what they are waiting for so the viewer does not lose interest. As well as this, the main part of this scene is the fact something has gone wrong, there was obviously two people trying too kill that person, one missed and one hit this causing a huge panic and confusion. My similar thing is that the killer actually killed for free without knowing, he was promised £4,000 if things went well but actually got killed himself instead.
Another type of shot in this clip i have used similar techniques to is the stalking shots at the start of the clip. The hunter/killer is eyeing up his target for quite a while, you can see him focus in and out on crucial spots in his scope and preparing too take the shot. In mine i have point where my killer slowly gets prepared whilst having his eye on his target.

I could not find many film scenes that used to the i showed time changing. But this clock is a brief example, many time lapse use a constant increased speed to show time moving without waiting the full time. But in this video and my waiting scene i use fading cuts too show time progressing. Also my character changes positions, these vary from normal to comfortable too odd positions. These show the viewer that the person waiting is bored and does not know what too do with themselves during the time they have too wait. Also the ticking creates a sense of uncertainty which helps create a slight atmosphere and kind of reinforces the emotion of the scene.

This clip above is a way i next want to shoot a phone call. I shot mine in a basic way, but next time i want too shoot a spilt screen rea; time conversation. This is not awfully hard to achieve, all i have to do it record actors on the phone and to choreograph as if they are talking too each other. This is a really effective and creative way of making a separate story from just one scene, this would only be done maybe a few times during a film and not every single time a phone call is made. Next time i will i record a short film i will definitely attempt to recreate something like this.

This is a really useful clips because of the over shoulder shot that slowly pans into the laptop screen. I could use this technique to capture the characters emotions and also show the reader what the character is emotional about. I plan to use this to show what the character is googling and also what is on his email. It is really important to be able to see this because it is essentially the whole plan of the story, without this shot the story would not make any sense at all.
I have learnt this technique earlier this year, this is important because I plan to use this to show my character waiting for a phone call back. This is a good way to capture the character getting bored, I will copy the different positions that the character goes in, this also shows time progression. The clip above is not very tense, there is no emotion behind the music used. In my edit I plan to add music or some sort of sound effect which can help create a sense of tension.
This short film has a few varying shots that plan to use, at the timestamp 0:41 you can see the hitman walking past trees whilst the camera pans and follows the hitman. I like this shot and plan to use it in my film, I think these tracking shots are important as they create suspense and show the viewer that the character has a plan or is on a mission. At timestamp 1:01 you can see the camera cuts to the hitman target, this is also a shot I plan to use. This is most likely on of the most important shots in a hitman film, it shows the character who the target is and also shot the dedication of the hitman usually from their facial expressions when they see their target.
Final Edit Evaluation:
Personally i found this too be very fun too film, i am happy how it has come out considering it took my just over a week to film and edit. I came up with the idea in a matter of hours, grouped together some actors, wrote a brief script and we started. Im still not entirely sure why i did not do this from the get go, with the two weeks i had to do this i created something basic but still had somewhat of a story. My original plans before i was referred completely went out the window when my plans went to shambles multiple times, i essentially gave up. For some reason the strict time limit to reshoot and rewrite website information motivated me to get on with it. I seem to rely on long time frames and just say 'ill do it tomorrow' and never actually do. I was like that during the initial project time and then as it caught up with me, plans went wrong and it just did not work. Next time i am given a project i will be on top of my work and slack has hard as i did on this one.
The film itself i personally think is decent, there is a few parts where i realised this hasn't worked but this was toward the end of editing and re watching clips and i couldn't go back too the original location and recoup all the actors without being a pain. I also feel like the films story itself is a bit patchy, there are few missing parts where information slips through and if the viewer looses interest for a moment it turns confusing. The main issues i faced here where some lighting issues and mic issues. As i was shooting in different areas throughout the film, i did not focus on lighting as much as i should of, so there are some scenes that are too dark and some too light. I attempted some basic colour correction but it did not seem too fix certain frames of the scene which needed it most. Now as i shot on an iphone for the reason that it is just so much simpler and the quality of a up to date iphone outweighs a DLSR i ran into some issues. We did not have a separate mic too film with that was connected directly to the actor, we encountered some rather interesting audio issues once i had reviewed the clips. As i am holding the iphone closer too me the mic picked up more of me breathing than it did the actor talking. Now for next time i either need to stop breathing so hard or get a wireless mic connected to the phone.
